Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 blood orange
  • 1 navel orange
  • 2 cups water
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar (divided)
  • 4 tsps grated orange zest
  • 1 cup strained fresh orange juice
  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • tsps baking powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Orange Topping: Thinly slice both oranges. In a saucepan, combine water and 1½ cups sugar over medium heat until dissolved. Add orange slices and simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly translucent. Remove from heat.
  2. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  3. Arrange Oranges: Place the simmered orange slices evenly at the bottom of the pan, pouring some syrup over them.
  4. Make the Cake Batter: In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat sugar and butter until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in sour cream and orange juice gradually. Fold in dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Bake: Pour batter over the oranges in the pan and bake for about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cooling for a few minutes before flipping onto a serving plate.
