  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons red gel food coloring
  • For the frosting: 2 packages cream cheese (8 ounces each, room temperature)
  • 4 sticks unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 5 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup red, white, and blue nonpareils

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with vegetable oil and dust with flour.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix granulated sugar, vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in red gel food coloring.
  4. Gradually combine dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for about 16 to 18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in pans for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  7. For the frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy; add salt and gradually mix in confectioners' sugar.
  8. Once cakes are completely cool, layer them with frosting in between each layer and on top and sides.
  9. Decorate with nonpareils after refrigerating for about ten minutes.
